The internet has made online gambling very accessible. This means that anyone with a computer can log on and play. All that it takes is a valid email address and a credit card. The next step that the online gambling industry took was to make the game itself more addictive. Some casinos offer bettors apps that are loaded onto their computers so that the user has to leave the area where they are gambling in order to update their information. The next step up from this is what we know today as internet gambling software.

The UIGEA which is United States Attorney General Eric Holder’s Anti-Gambling Task Force, is an example of this type of software. It basically allows users of online gambling sites to place bets under false pretenses. As a result of this illegal activity, the government filed criminal charges against the online gambling sites and against the individuals who created the programs. The UIGEA made it illegal for UIGEA registered companies to transfer money or other kinds of assets to individuals in the United States if there was evidence that they had conducted unlawful internet gambling.

The UIGEA was a huge victory for online gambling websites, because if they were found guilty, they faced large fines or even jail time. This helped the online gambling industry stay in business because they didn’t have the money to go out of business. Luckily enough for the state officials, some lawmakers decided to take up the fight against the UIGEA. Two separate bills were introduced in the United States House and Senate to overturn the UIGEA and allow online gambling websites to operate as normal.

Both of these pieces of legislation were considered controversial by many within the online gambling community.
